Saturday football: Tulips edged out by leaders, Tigers walloped by Wood and Pinchbeck go top

Spalding United suffered a 2-1 defeat at Evo-Stik NPL First Division South leaders Basford United on Saturday, while Holbeach United went down 5-0 at Walsall Wood in the Buildbase FA Vase and Pinchbeck United beat Burton Park Wanderers 2-1 in ChromaSport UCL Division One.

Starting with the Tulips – who lined up with a strong side despite the much publicised budget cut last week – a late Gary King goal wasn’t enough to take anything from unbeaten Basford.

Adam Jackson’s seventh-minute own goal gave the hosts the lead, before Matt Thornhill (69) doubled the advantage.

King notched in the final minute, but Spalding’s loss sees them slip to tenth in the table.

It was a day to forget for Holbeach, meanwhile.

They crashed out of the FA Vase in the second round, as lower-graded hosts Walsall Wood smashed five unanswered goals.

Meanwhile, Pinchbeck climbed back to the top of UCL Division One with a battling 2-1 Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field success over Burton.

In ChromaSport PDFL Premier Division, Moulton Harrox stay top after bouncing back from last week’s loss with a 2-0 win over Deeping Rangers Reserves.

Sutton Bridge United lost 4-0 at Peterborough Sports Reserves, while Holbeach United Reserves were 2-0 winners at Stamford Lions.
