Saturday football: Impressive away win for Spalding United, Holbeach United lose again and Moulton grab derby glory

Spalding United picked up a fine 2-1 win at promotion-chasing Belper Town on Saturday, while Holbeach United took another step towards relegation after losing 4-1 at rivals Newark.

Starting in the Pitching In NPL Midlands Division, goals in each half from Ben Starkie and Gregg Smith gave the Tulips another eye-catching success against one of the league’s big-hitters.

Winger Starkie fired Brett Whaley’s side ahead with a direct free-kick on 30 minutes at The Raygar Stadium, which had been under water at the start of the week – leaving the game in doubt.

Spalding were glad the match did go ahead, though, and doubled their lead when Smith netted from the sport with ten minutes left.

Josh Woodcock pulled one back with three minutes left, but the 11th-placed Tulips held on to move up withing four points of eighth place.

In the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division North, it’s now 25 games without a win for rock-bottom Holbeach United after their heavy defeat at Newark.

Richemone Sylla got two of the goals for the hosts, who are now five points clear of Pinchbeck United in the second relegation spot and still have two games in hand.

Elsewhere, Moulton Harrox saw off South Holland neighbours Holbeach United Reserves 2-1 in the ChromaSport PDFL League Cup.

Crowland Town Reserves lost 5-2 against Stamford Lions in the same competition, while Pinchbeck United Reserves went down 8-0 at Oundle Town.

More to follow on all games.
