Saracen’s Head trio breaking new powerlifting ground

The record-breaking efforts of three powerlifters from Saracen’s Head will go unrecorded because they are not members of the event’s organising federation.

Craig Candler, and Tom and Will Chenery all lifted heavier weights than the current benchmark during their wins at the British Powerlifting Federation Push and Pull Championship at Derby.

Craig (28), who actually set a personal best with a 280kg deadlift, said: “The records won’t stand, though, because we’re not members of the federation.

“We’re all planning to join when it’s available in December.”

The men were competing in the unequipped lifting event in differing categories and each had three lifts.

Craig (110kg category) deadlifted 255kg, 270kg and then that staggering 280kg.

Tom (26) was in the 82.5kg class and benchlifted 140kg and 147.5kg before failing at 152.5kg.

And Will (23) bowed out at 180kg after successfully benchlifting 160kg and 172kg.

The trio are all members of Holbeach Weighttraining Club.
