Road closures in summer break

A rash of road closures for Spalding town centre will see diversion routes in force over the summer holiday.

But Lincolnshire County Council has confirmed that a clash of three road closures out of the four leading to a roundabout in town, has been averted.

Phase two of the county’s Queens Road path improvements will start on Wednesday, July (23) and last to September 19.

The road will be closed for the entire duration of the works with a signed diversion route via Holbeach Road, A16, Low Road and vice versa.

The first phase of the scheme was completed last year and this year’s work includes improved pedestrian crossing points alongside a ‘much improved’ footpath.

Cadent will also be undertaking a mains replacement scheme in the same area and, said a county council spokesman, it “will work in coordination with us under the road closure once our works begin.”

“We are aware of these works and have planned them so that our own footway reconstruction scheme is working in collaboration with Cadent’s gas mains replacement works. We will be sharing a road closure on Queens Road and by working collaboratively, we will be reducing the occupation of the road by 13 days,” added the spokesman.

Cadent is also closing Albert Street and then Halmer Gate to continue the mains replacement programme.
Diversions for Halmer Gate will be via Low Road, the A16, Cowbit Road and Church Street.

Diversions for Albert Street are also via Low Road, the A16, A151 and Commercial Road.

“The current intention is that Halmer Gate will only be closed once works are complete and Albert Street is reopened.

“We have worked hard with all stakeholders to ensure that as much as possible of these works take place during school holiday times due to the number of schools in the area and the importance of Halmer Gate for the schools and their students.

A quick glance at the online roadworks plans mapped via the council’s website (see above) had shown Halmergate ad Albert Street as potentially closed at the same time which, with Queens Road also shut to traffic, would have caused major issues for the town.

The footpath work in Queens Road is costing around £200,000 to deliver and should see work carried out between 7.30am and 5.30pm. There will also be temporary traffic lights.
