A former-Royal Marine owner of a Holbeach gym is taking on a gruelling challenge for charity to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.
Sam Fowler (31) of Royals Gym has set himself a gruelling challenge to raise money for the Royal British Legion and Royal Marines Charity.
On Friday, November 9, at 6am, Sam will start his first set of running 10km, ten pull-ups, 10 squats carrying 100kg, 10 press-ups and ten deadlifts carrying 100kg.
Sam plans to repeat this 10 times.
Of the 100km running total, Sam said: “I had to run 30 miles to get my green beret. I’ve never done more than 30 – this is 62 miles.”
Sam, who trains every day, said this is his biggest challenge yet – especially as running and lifting rarely combine in endurance feats.
“I’m expecting massive muscular fatigue,” Sam said. “I’ll get cramp in my legs for sure, if not from running then from heavy lifting.”
Sam predicts the feat will take at least 12 hours and will come down to mental strength.
“It’ll be a mind game between myself and the physical pain.”
But his experience in the forces will drive him to succeed in the fundraising event.
“It’s nothing compared to what men and women in the last century have gone through,” Sam said.
“It’s just one day and at the end of the day I’ll go home, have a cooked meal and sleep in my bed.”
Sam said Remembrance Day is “a bit closer to home”:
“Losing friends within the forces and people I’ve met along the way.
“It’s not just for those who died, it’s for all people in the military, the sacrifices they make and the sacrifices their families make to support them,” Sam said.
To donate to Sam’s cause, you can sponsor him online at www.justgiving.com/teams/remember1918-2018 or drop in to the gym at to donate cash at 19-25 Fleet Street, seven days a week.
Sam will perform the charity feat at the gym, so drop in on November 9 to cheer him on.
