Last Thursday’s EU Referendum was the biggest democratic exercise that I have been involved in during my 52-year activity in politics. The electorate have spoken and have given the Government a clear instruction that they want Britain to leave the EU.
I, alongside colleagues across the political divide, campaigned for a ‘remain’ vote in the referendum. And I stand by my belief that Britain is stronger, safer, better off in the EU. But I also believe that it is fundamental to accept the verdict of the British people and move forward together.
That’s why my focus, together with my Government colleagues, will be to make the ‘leave’ vote work for everyone in our country. This means supporting the new Prime Minister, whoever is chosen, in negotiating the most favourable status for Britain.
Above all, our new status will need to make sure we can continue to trade freely with the EU; which is not just a concern for me but many of my fellow local business owners. Rural communities are important and our local growing and food industry base must be recognised in any negotiations.
The British economy is fundamentally strong, we are highly competitive and we are open for business. We start from a position of hard-won strength, and whatever the undoubted challenges; the Government and the Conservative Party is determined to do the best for Britain.
