QEH buys BMI hospital

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital has bought a private facility which shares its site.

The King’s Lynn-based hospital, which also serves South Lincolnshire, has bought the private BMI Sandringham Hospital which is next door at the Gayton Road site.

Members of the board of directors and governors council have approved the purchase this week.

The 76 staff will be transferred from the private company to the QEH trust.

The move will mean additional capacity at the QEH for planned NHS operations and procedures. It will add an additional 30 in-patient beds and two operating theatres.

“The extra capacity will initially support our response to the coming winter period, allowing us to continue with planned elective operations or procedures despite increased emergency admissions which in the past has seen some elective procedures postponed at short notice,” said Caroline Shaw, chief executing at the QEH.

“This is a really exciting step forward for our trust, our patients and the communities we serve and one which is in keeping with our five-year strategy. We look forward to welcoming NHS patients to the site over the coming weeks and months,” she added.

The trust will also use the site for a small, private practice to boost hospital income.
