Pumpkin fun for harvest spirits

The pandemic has curtailed many things this year, but Spalding’s Pumpkin Festival will go ahead.

From scarecrows to pet photo competitions, there will be plenty of things to do.

A special Harvest Time Trail will be launched this weekend with ten town centre businesses getting involved.

Scarecrows will be incorporated into their window displays from October 10 to 31 and anyone finding all ten will be put into a prize draw. Three people will win prizes from the trail.

For those wishing to stay home and participate, there is a Pumpkin Pets Photo online competition.

Residents can take an autumnal-themed picture of their pets and have the chance of winning a £50 Rookes Pet Products voucher.

A shortlist of entries will be drawn-up and then a public vote will be held via the South Holland District Council Communities Facebook page.

The competition opens on Friday and is due to close on October 23.

There will also be a host of interactive activities to get involved with via the Facebook page – including a pumpkin carving demonstration by BBC-featured artist Jonathan Nicolls.

“The Pumpkin Festival is always a highlight of the calendar in South Holland and it is a real shame that it isn’t possible for it to take place as normal this year,” said Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for communities and facilities.

“The range of different events and activities our communities team are offering instead will hopefully still give everyone a chance to get involved and get a bit of harvest happiness going in their household,” he added.

“So whether it’s searching for scarecrows in Spalding or persuading your pets to pose with a pumpkin, I look forward to seeing plenty of people getting involved in the fun and seeing what fantastic creations people are able to come up with to celebrate this important period together.”

To take part in the events, visit www.sholland.gov.uk/WhatsOn from Friday.
