Player/boss Cawthorn back with a double to seal Long Sutton Athletic victory

A second-half double from returning player/boss Matt Cawthorn fired Long Sutton Athletic to a 3-1 home win over Glinton and Northborough on Saturday.

Matt Oliver’s well-taken finish gave Sutton a deserved 1-0 lead at the break, but Andrew Wright’s impressive finish on 50 minutes levelled the scores at London Road.

However, hitman Cawthorn – who has missed the last few games through injury – headed home a Sean Gedney cross to put the Magpies back ahead.

He then buried his 29th of the season from the spot following a foul on man-of-the-match Ryan Brothwell to seal Sutton’s eighth ChromaSport PDFL Division One win of the season.

Cawthorn said: “I was surprised to see a completely different Glinton team from the one that made us work very hard to get the three points at the start of the season – and we produced one of our best all-round performances that day.

“Nothing is a given three points in this league, as I’ve mentioned recently.

“Saturday was far from the best display of football we’ve had this year. We made silly mistakes, gave the ball away cheaply and made hard it work for ourselves.

“But, when Billy Oliver and Ryan Brothwell got the partnership going in midfield, we got on top – which led to the opening goal. Credit to ‘Broth’, he’s been playing in the Reserves, but stepped up and was superb.

“We deserved our half-time lead and it could have been more.

“It was going to be a mistake or a ‘worldie’ finish that got them back into the game – and we conceded a well-taken goal five minutes into the second half.

“However, we had Sean Gedney back in the team – which is very pleasing for everyone here. He played a great ball into the box for me to head home and then the penalty sealed it.

“We started out trying to gain three points and that’s what we did, so credit to the boys.”
