A petition to keep Pennygate Surgery open has been launched ahead of Monday’s public meeting on its future (August 20).
Last week The Voice reported that Dr Azmenna Nathu, who runs the surgery and owns the building, is to retire and the surgery will close September 7.
It follows two poor Care Quality Commission (CQC) reports.
Now Coun Angela Newton is spearheading the campaign to save the service.
She and volunteers took out a market stall on Tuesday and will do so again on Saturday to collect signatures calling for the surgery to remain open and raising awareness of Monday’s meeting.
That takes place at 2.30pm at the Pennygate Foundation.
Coun Newton said on Tuesday: “There are no other GPs on that side of town and that’s where most new homes are being built.
“I’d like the NHS to try and rent out the building until a new surgery that’s on a new development or part of the new local plan is built.”
