A pedestrian refuge is being installed on a Donington road at the centre of a speed limit row.
A 50mph speed limit has been introduced on Bicker Road, but residents and campaigners had previously requested a 40mph limit.
A report to the county council’s planning and regulation committee on Monday (September 29) says members would be considering objections to the 50mph traffic order.
The police had advised against a 40mph limit saying it would result in ‘high levels of non-compliance’ as a result.
“A lower limit here may result in driver frustration and more overtaking manoeuvres, thereby risking an increase in collisions,” said the report.
But the subject is back before the committee due to the high number of objections to the 50mph limit. A petition with 438 signatures was sent in. There were fears that the recent opening of a new Co-op store meant more pedestrian footfall on a busy junction.
“Much reference has been made by the objectors in relation to the safety of pedestrians crossing the A52. However, the installation of a pedestrian refuge will be programmed in the coming months and will therefore will provide a crossing point for pedestrians and improve safety in this area,” says the report.
“A departure from the criteria set out in the speed limit policy may be approved by the executive councillor for highways, transport and IT where a borderline case has been identified. Given the concerns raised by the police however, this committee has supported a recommendation that a 50mph speed limit be subject to public consultation,” the report concludes.
