A Spalding historian has published his first book on the town.
Forgotten Spalding has been created by Patrick Wensor over the last 18 months following retirement.
The hardback book of more than 300 pages is ‘a rediscovery of some of the long-forgotten stories of places and people who traded in the 1700s and 1800s that throws light on some of the historic buildings in the town’.
It stretches across incredibly varied topics from murder to lost buildings even WG Grace playing in the town during three parts entitled ‘Lost In Time’ referencing Spalding town, ‘Spalding Brewers and Breweries’ and ‘Out of Town’.
The latter includes sections on Surfleet Reservoir ‘sand fairs’ and the history of nearby roads.
Pat says the book was written over the last 18 months after he retired after a career in IT.
It’s clear from the book that there’s a whole lifetime of living in the area given to the project by the trustee of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society and member of the Spalding and District Civic Society and Friends of Spalding Cemetery.
“I’ve always been interested in history and written things for local historian Nancy Snowden and a bit on Ayscoughfee as well as for the society,” said Pat. “I’m really proud of it.
“It’s good to get it in your hands and actually feel your creation.”
Forgotten Spalding is available for £30 from stores including Spalding News in Market Place, Geoff Neal Dry Cleaners, Daisies in The Crescent and Vine House Farm in Deeping St Nicholas.
