‘Over 8,000’ have their say on waste

There were ‘over 8,000’ responses to South Holland District Council’s waste service survey with the numbers that wanted bins or to stay with bags too close to call.

Its portfolio holder for environmental services Coun Jack Tyrrell, said on Tuesday night any future decision won’t be based entirely on the findings of the survey though.
“I’m very pleased that over 8,000 surveys were received,” Coun Tyrrell said of the consultation that closed on Sunday. “We don’t know the exact number as yet.
“I even got 40 more while standing at Long Sutton Market on Saturday when it was chucking it down.
“I’m pleased with how it’s gone. I know I said I’d like 10,000 responses, but over 8,000 is a decent amount.
“We’ll know the final figure soon.”
On whether the majority would like to stay with the bin bags and weekly collections or have wheelie bins and bi-weekly collections, Coun Tyrrell said that the results were too close to call.
“I don’t know what it’s going to be as it was hanging in the balance last time,” he continued.
“The decision won’t just be based on the amount that vote for it.
“It’s about working out the costs involved too and if those financial issues for the council might mean funding is lost from other services too.
“If people would like us to spend that kind of money to keep bags then that is money that will be taken from other services.
“I look forward to seeing what the public consensus is.”
