A drone that will help police in South Holland has been named ‘Apollo’ by a Fleet pupil.
Danny Griggs, of Fleet Wood Lane Primary School in Fleet, submitted the name picked out by assistant chief constable Chris Davison.
He received a Mini Police hat and coat to say thank you for taking part.
ACC Davison said: “This was the best job of the day.
“It was a very difficult choice; I could have chosen so many of the names suggested.
“I had to choose the final four and I think they represent all that is good in Lincolnshire.
“The Apollo program succeeded in the first moon landing.
“While our drones don’t fly that far, this ground-breaking technology allows us to fly drones across all areas of our county.
“Boston and South Holland include vast areas of countryside and coastal areas; our drones help officers on the ground check areas far quicker, and in more detail, than the more traditional ways we had before we had our drones.”
Elsewhere, the drone for Grantham is to be called Isaac after Isaac Newton, Skegness’ will be called Sherlock Drone and Lincoln’s Cristiano Dronaldo.
Kevin Taylor, Chief Drone Pilot, Lincolnshire Police, said: “Clearly everyone has put a lot of thought in to choosing these names. This competition is fun but importantly a great opportunity for us to engage with school children about the technology, responsibility and creativity drones offer.
“No doubt some of these children will go on to be our next generation of police officers, drone pilots or maybe even police drone pilots, and we want them to see how important technology has become in modern day policing.”
