Olympic effort from Spalding United as Lockie and Wells sink Rushall

Rushall Olympic 0
Spalding United 2

A much-changed Spalding United sprang an upset on Tuesday night as they picked up a 2-0 Integro League Cup win at higher-graded Rushall Olympic.

Second-half strikes from teenage talent Jonny Lockie (52) and top scorer Bradley Wells (90) fired the Tulips into round three at Dales Lane – and dumped out a Rushall side that are second in the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division standings.

With manager Dave Frecklington on scouting duty at Lincoln United’s home clash with Saturday’s opponents Shaw Lane AFC, his number two Chris Rawlinson took charge.

And, with skipper Nathan Stainfield and regulars Nathan Whitehead, Brad Barraclough, Neal Spafford and goal-machine Wells on the bench, it was very much a new-look Spalding side.

A goalless first half saw Paul Walker clip the bar with a strike as the Tulips held their own, but they did lose Conor Higginson to injury two minutes before the interval.

Olympic started the second half well, but Spalding got their noses in front when Lee Beeson teed up Lockie seven minutes in.

Jack Wightwick, who had a fine game on the flank, then provided another assist for Wells to clinch the victory. His inch-perfect delivery was volleyed home by the Evo-Stik NPL First Division South’s leading marksman, who now has 21 for the season.

Tulips: Walton, Lemon, Jackson, Varley (Stainfield 66), Field, Walker, Beeson, Fleming (Wells 76), Lockie, Wightwick, Higginson (Barraclough 43). Not used: Spafford, Whitehead.

Attendance: 71.

MOTM: Fleming.
