Nursery kids help elderly celebrate Christmas as thank you for help during teacher’s ‘worst two weeks’

Nursery school children have been bringing Christmas joy to elderly residents as part of a thank you from a bereaved daughter.

Those at Sunflower Lodge in Pinchbeck attended Georgian Court this morning (Thursday, December 19) to sing songs for those in the assisted living accommodation.

It’s come about after the nursery’s co-owner Lisa Oddie wanted to say thank you for the care her dad Peter Yates received from the Good Companions company ran by Heidi Hayman.

The 78-year-old was diagnosed with terminal cancer in August and then died just two weeks later.

“They were the worst two weeks of my life,” said Lisa. “Heidi saved me basically.

“The care she showed for my dad was incredible and I wanted to give something back to say thank you.

“I don’t have a lot, but I do have these children at the nursery, so we’ve been practicing Christmas songs since September preparing to come and sing to some of the older people Heidi looks just to bring a bit of joy to them in the run up to Christmas.”

For the fourth year Heidi and Good Companions are also going to be providing Christmas meals that they’re cooking for those on their own.

This year they’ve been boosted by National Farm Produce who have stepped in to provide the vegetables that will be cooked by the team at the company that helps with assisted living.

The children at the Sunflower Lodge nursery are going to make mince pies that will be handed with the meals.

“It’s all about helping people and the community coming together,” said Heidi who herself is welcoming two people in their 90s and a homeless person into her home so they’re not alone on Christmas Day. “Lots of people find Christmas very difficult, so it’s about helping them.

“Hopefully other companies will come on board in future years.”

‘Music Man’ John Lawrence led the youngsters.
