Nikols and Cobb pick up victories

Ros Nikols and Brian Cobb picked up wins as Welland Yacht Club’s Commodore’s Points series continued.

Five boats took to the water for round three and four.

First away were the Laser Radials of Gail Follington and Alan Cox at 9 minutes 30 seconds into the 60-minute race, then 20 seconds later the two Europes of Nickols and Cobb and finally at 11 minutes 40 seconds, the Laser of Mark Holland got underway.

With the wind direction providing a down river start it was a short series of tacks to the windward mark (buoy one) before making the long run down to buoy five.

Optimistically a long course was set as at the start with the wind not too blustery.

WINNER: Ros Nikols won round three of the Commodore’s Points series.

Cox led the way up the course as Nickols and Cobb closed in on Follington and would get past as they made their way onto the top straight.

With the wind now constantly shifting Follington found her way through to the lead as they rounded buoy five with Nickols now up to second from Cox third, Cobb fourth and Holland fifth.

Undertaking their way back down river Nickols would take the lead and Cobb moved to second as the wind died away.

As they got on to the clubhouse straight Follington managed to retake second with five minutes remaining.

Nickols took the win from Follington, with Cobb third.

After a short break the second race got underway on a shorter course with Katie Follington now taking part in a Topper.

She was first away at the start of the 60 minutes with the rest in the previous starting order.

On reaching the windward mark Nickols found herself misjudging her turn and hit the buoy meaning she would have to take two penalty turns which dropped her back to fifth.

With the wind having picked up a little the Topper of Katie Follington soon found itself caught by the larger sail boats.

Cobb found himself out in front from Gail Follington and Alan Cox, Ros Nickols fourth, Mark Holland fifth and Katie Follington sixth.

The order would remain unchanged until the end of the 60 minutes.
