New wheelie bin waste collections to start in November

Wheelie bins and new recycling measures are set to be rolled out in November, South Holland District Council say.

From August residents will receive new bins for waste and recycling, a kerbside caddy and a smaller kitchen caddy for food waste which has a lockable lid.

The new containers will be used as follows:

* The bin with the black lid is for general waste.

* The bin with the purple lid is for dry paper and cardboard

* The bin with the blue lid is for mixed recycling.

* The kitchen and kerbside caddies are for food waste including bones, vegetable peelings, tea bags and food scraps.

Food waste will be collected weekly, general waste fortnightly, paper and card and mixed recycling will be collected monthly.

The authority also says it will be reviewing collection rounds and ‘new calendars will be sent to residents prior to the start of the new service in November’.

Coun Jim Astill, Portfolio Holder for Corporate and Environmental Services, said: “We will be bringing the new service to 48,000 households and it represents one of the most significant changes we have made to a frontline service in decades, helping to create a more effective and environmentally responsible way of managing waste.

“Work is already well underway on redesigning collection rounds and upgrading our systems and vehicles. Our waste crews will get full training when the new vehicles arrive. A great deal of work is going into making sure the service is set up to work well for residents for the long term.”

“We are putting in extra resources to ensure that we can keep the current collection rounds operating effectively while we bring in this major change to the waste service.”

The council has previously said that it’s preparing for more demand on its assisted collection service.

A spokesman said: “The council is also undertaking a review of assisted collections and exempt properties.

Residents who currently have assisted collections are being contacted so that their needs can be assessed.

“Residents who think that they may need an assisted collection or who feel their property is unsuitable for the new bins will soon be able to submit a request and an assessment will be made by a member of the team.

“A series of engagement events will be held across the district, giving residents the opportunity to ask questions, find out more about the changes and speak directly with members of the project team.”
