New homes honour Suffragette leader

A new housing development in Spalding will be named in honour of political activist and suffragette movement leader Emmeline Pankhurst, the centenary year of the first women being recognised with the right to vote.

South Holland District Council owned Welland Homes’ new scheme at Pankhurst Close, located near Parkside Crescent in Spalding, has started with the development of 10 two-bedroom homes, which will be completed spring 2019.

The name was chosen following a proposal from Welland Homes board member Coun Elizabeth Sneath.
The name was then approved after a period of feedback and consultation.

Coun Christine Lawton, portfolio holder for housing and health, said: “The new development of Parkside Crescent is excellent news and a great opportunity for Spalding to further strengthen its housing provision.

“The decision to recognise Emmeline Pankhurst in the naming of the street is one I welcome, especially with the special significance of this centenary year.”

South Holland District Council heritage champion Coun Elizabeth Sneath said: “It is fantastic to see this monumental moment in the long struggle for equal rights for women being properly recognised, ensuring that the memory of those who showed great commitment and made huge sacrifices so that we all have the right to vote will continue far into the future.

“I feel very proud that my proposal for Pankhurst Close is being implemented, and hope that the name will  inspire even just a few
people to research the  history behind it both in South Holland, which has a deep history of women in politics, but also further afield as well.”
