New footbridge at Spalding level crossing still a possibility

A new footbridge over a busy Spalding level crossing is not imminent – but has not been ruled out.

The reintroduction of a bridge at Winsover Road is likely to be welcomed by pedestrians and cyclists as increased use of the upgraded rail line leads to the level crossing being closed more often.

However, South Holland and The Deepings MP John Hayes said the case for needing a footbridge is “unproven” and he has had no calls to see one introduced.

Yet it’s understood there was a requirement upon Network Rail to build a footbridge when it was given permission for the level crossing upgrade.

But Network Rail says: “There are currently no plans under consideration for a footbridge at Winsover Road.

“However, Winsover Road is a very busy level crossing for pedestrians and vehicles (it being a main artery into Spalding) and as such, over the coming years, we may need to consider all options at this site for a safe and high-performing railway.”

A footbridge was mentioned during a meeting last week attended by Mr Hayes, Network Rail route managing director Phil Verster and parties interested in the future of three local signal boxes.
