Spalding’s Andy Molsom picked up two fourth places on his first-ever outing at Zandvoort in Holland.
The Caterham Graduates Racing Club race ace remains third in the driver standings after his solid showing.
In a change to the usual formula, qualifying and racing was condensed into one day.
Molsom didn’t get the clear laps in that he needed, but was satisfied with qualifying fifth for both races. The first race saw Molsom make a great start, making up a place before the first corner.
Once the first few laps settled down, it was four cars fighting for the lead. Molsom couldn’t quite take the fight to the leaders, but was never very far away, finishing the 25-minute race in fourth.
Molsom, of Molsom and Associates Optometrists in Spalding, said: “An excellent start really made the race, Zandvoort is notorious for difficulty with overtaking, so that was crucial.”
The second race was a little more eventful. A good start kept Molsom in fifth place, but he fought his way up to fourth by the end of the first lap.
From then on it was a four-way battle for the lead. A safety car intervention, the live snatch of a car in the gravel and a medical car on the track spiced things up but split the group up, leaving the last two laps pretty uneventful, with Molsom fourth again.
“Another fourth place finish was good, especially at my first visit to the race track,” added Molsom. “It was only a little disappointing that the podium was so close in both races.”
Molsom leaves Zandvoort still lying third in the championship, not accounting for three dropped scores. There are four races remaining at two different circuits, with the next race at Castle Combe in Wiltshire in early September.
Molsom added: “There is only three points between the three of us competing for third place in the Championship.
“It’s looking like it will go down to the very last race at Thruxton in October.”
