BOWLS: Jordan inspires Ayscoughfee to success in county knockout final

Ayscoughfee Bowls Club were crowned county club champions after clinching two thrilling wins at Lincolnshire finals.

The talented team lifted The Driffill Trophy, an EBA county knockout competition in which clubs from all over Lincolnshire compete.
Ayscoughfee, who are captained by Ashley Caress, qualified for the last four after successfully winning their area by defeating Blackstones (Stamford) in the area final.

Burton House in Boston was the venue for the finals, with the Spalding side up against Horncastle, Cleethorpes and Grantham in a battle for the title.
The format for the event was four rinks of three, with the overall score deciding the winner.

Cleethorpes defeated Grantham with ease, winning on every rink and progressing to the final.

Meanwhile, Horncastle proved to be a tough test, with two of their rinks beating Ayscoughfee skips Jordan Philpott and Chris Warboys.
This left Ayscoughfee 11 shots behind on the overall score. Caress won by four shots to get them back in business, but the star rink of the last-four clash was Nigel Brown, Eamonn Cherry and Alan Cherry – who won by 18 shots to secure progression to the final.

Cleethorpes, who have won this competition multiple times before, went into the final as clear favourites. Indeed, within their ranks was Commonwealth gold medallist Amy Gowshall.
Ayscoughfee started slowly and found themselves trailing by 13 shots early on. However, as the game entered the final third, the Spalding side stepped up a gear – inspired by the performance of 17-year-old Jordan Philpott.
An indoor international, Philpott proved his worth on the lawn surface as he raced 11 shots up on Gowshall.

Elsewhere, 23-year-old skipper Caress was in equally impressive form.
Alongside his dad Paul Caress and brother Daniel Caress, it was somewhat of a family affair as the trio picked up 12 shots in just four ends to flip the final in Ayscoughfee’s favour.

As the game concluded, the South Holland side took complete control and deservedly ran out county champions.
Alan Cherry and Chris Warboys lost by nine and seven shots respectively, but Philpott won by 11 shots and Ashley Caress won 27-6 to record a 21-shot victory.
