More than £20,000 donated to Forces charities

Donations topping £20,000 were distributed at a special event in Holbeach at the weekend.

The town’s community centre was transformed for a thanksgiving party organised by Harold Payne of the Anglia Motel.

His customers donated more than £20,000 via the charity boxes in the motel at Fleet and Mr Payne said he was delighted with the amount raised.

“I am absolutely amazed at the amount. We were closed for three days at Christmas and in a week we raised more than £1,000,” he said.

The party was arranged to thank helpers and fundraisers along with veterans and friends.

A further £1,732 was raised on the night and Holbeach’s Chosen Charity gave £7,000.

The Royal Anglian regiment and the D-Day Boys charity each received £10,000 while £1,000 went to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and RAF Marham.

Over the last 28 years, a total of £523,000 has gone to the D-Day boys and £150,000 to the Royal Anglian Regiment’s Benevolent Fund.

The D-Day Boys charity has been used to take parties of veterans back to the site of the World War Two battle in Normandy which led to the liberation of Europe.
