The all-round strength of both teams was on show as Spalding Water Polo went down 13-11 to Grantham at Bourne outdoor pool for a competitive pre-season friendly.
Spalding named 16 players from across their men’s and women’s teams, ensuring plenty of game time for club members.
With coaches regularly rotating players, the contest flowed between men’s and women’s line-ups, creating a unique and closely fought encounter.
Spalding edged into a 6-5 half-time lead but Grantham’s men’s team came out strongly after the restart, producing an impressive spell that saw them score eight goals, restricting Spalding to two.
A change in personnel swung the momentum and Spalding’s women responded in style with three unanswered goals to keep their side firmly in contention.
Despite the late rally, Grantham held on to secure a narrow victory.
