Martin heroics not enough

Pinchbeck United made a disappointing return to the United Counties League with a 3-0 opening day defeat at Sandiacre Town.

Goalkeeper Ben Martin was called into early action with two great saves but the second saw the loose ball rebound to a home player to score.

Martin was kept busy and it was not until the half-hour mark that the Knights tested the home goalkeeper, with Flynn Slater shooting straight at him.

Slater then sent Foster but he dragged his shot wide

Sandiacre doubled their advantage a minute after the break and added another to take all three Division One points.

Knights: Martin, Simpson (Thorrold), Balding, Melson, Brooks, Sherrif, Forster, Panton (Howlett), Slater (Shinn), Cullen, Ward (Brocklesby). Sub: Douce.

Att: 85.

Pinchbeck make their Eslaforde Park debut on Saturday when they welcome Radford to their temporary Sleaford home, KO 3pm.

The club is celebrating an early honour with their spiritual Knight Street home being in the running for a new award.

The Glebe Field pitch is one of nine nominations for the inaugural Best In Grass Award, celebrating the people who keep football pitches across Lincolnshire looking beautiful.

* There are plenty of venue changes in the Peterborough League, which gets under way on August 9.
Holbeach United Reserves have pulled out of the Premier Division, while South Lincolnshire Swifts have announced a groundshare with Pinchbeck United at their Knight Street ground.
Sutton Bridge United will be sharing with Tydd at the Glebe Field until new changing room facilities are completed at their Memorial Park ground, while league new boys Littleport United will be playing at Fosdyke.
