Market stall ready for consultations

Spalding residents have the chance to talk to the Town Board about its vision for the town with a £20m cash injection.

The board has recently published its vision for the town with ideas as to where money would be well spent.
There was a drop-in session on Tuesday at the town’s South Holland Centre and there will be another next Tuesday (October 21) from 12pm to 7.30pm.
There will also be a dedicated market stall on the town’s market place on Saturday (October 18) and again on Tuesday (October 21).
The proposals, which will be reviewed and updated if necessary after consultation, have to be submitted to central government by the final deadline of November 28.
The ideas include making the town centre and waterfront more welcoming while utilising the Sheep Market as a versatile space.
The proposals are outlined in a brochure which is available online via the love
spalding.co.uk website.
There is an online consultation form available on the same website.
Among a raft of ideas outlined is a permanent canopy in Hall Place.
The board also says it could take on vacant buildings in and around the Market Place for things like a street food hall.
A new arch announcing Bridge Street could also be developed. A new footbridge and tiered seating making the most of the waterfront.
More signs, a floating pier and potential community hubs or spaces for artists or crafters have also been included.
The money has come from central government, via the Plan for Neighbourhoods, and the Town Board, set up in 2024, is overseeing the project.
A total of 442 responses were made to an earlier round of consultation, in May and June of last year.
Among the priorities highlighted was the request for a greater police presence which was followed by making improvements in public spaces and streets.
Respondents also said the best thing about the town was its river and waterfront area which was not being fully exploited.
The announcement about the funding was made two years ago with rounds of consultation following. There was a break in the process after the change of government in 2024.
Once the regeneration plan and investment plan is submitted to government by November 28, the funding should begin to arrive from April 2026.
The funding and the programme finishes in March 2036.
