Man admits deliberately starting fire at Spalding home

A man today (Wednesday) admitted endangering life by setting a fire at a home in Spalding.

Fernando Martins, 60, pleaded guilty to a charge of arson as being reckless to endanger life when he appeared at Lincoln Crown Court.

The court heard Martins admitted endangering the life of Fernando Garcia by setting a fire at the property in Holbeach Road, Spalding, on September 7 this year.

Martins, also of Holbeach Road, Spalding, followed the hearing via a Portuguese interpreter.

Defence barrister Rebecca Freitas told the court a psychiatric report had been prepared on Martins.

Miss Freitas explained: “The recommendation is that he is fit to plead and would benefit from a mental health treatment requirement.”

Judge Catarina Sjolin-Knight adjourned sentence until November 20 for the preparation of a probation report on Martins.

“You have pleaded guilty to what I know you understand is a serious matter,” Judge Sjolin-Knight told Martins.

“Whoever sentences you needs to know more about you and the risk you pose in the future because setting fires is a very dangerous thing to do.”

Martins was remanded into custody until his next court appearance.
