Losses but safety secured

Holbeach United suffered two defeats in four days but it was academic with relegation places now decided from the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League.

Needham Market Reserves, Wivenhoe Town and Leiston u23s will be going down, leaving the Tigers two places above the cut-off line but 11 points clear with two games to play.

With only four points separating 11th and 16th going into Wednesday’s trip to title favourites Kings Park Rangers, there was still chance for Holbeach to finish in the top 11.

The previous Wednesday’s trip to Wroxham Reserves saw a threadbare Tigers team go down 2-0.

Manager Callum Lawe said: “It was a big test, with availability very low and we travelled with just 11 players.

“But the lads showed outstanding character, resilience and commitment.

“That performance said a lot about this group and the mentality we are building.”

Holbeach finished the game a player short after losing Oli Williams to two yellow cards.

On Saturday, three mistakes proved costly, handing visitors Halesworth Town all the points in a 3-1 home defeat.

Josh Bodibe was on target to ensure all was square at the break but the Suffolk side struck twice more to take all the points.

Tigers (v Wroxham): Sellars, Akyüz, Roberts, West, Oldham, Nicholson, Kacirek, Coelho, Williams, Garner, Bodibe.
Attendance: 76.
Tigers (v Halesworth): Sellars, Akyüz Roberts, West, Oldham, Nicholson, Kacirek, Hyde, Garner, Szablowski, Bodibe. Subs: Grimwood, Shenille, Bell, Winks, Barnes.
