Lorry ‘travelling 27mph’ ploughs into Indian restaurant in Whaplode

Spice Cottage, Whaplode. Lorry collided with building. NAMES:

An articulated lorry left the main road in Whaplode and hit a restaurant on Monday night.

The incident on the A151 High Road happened during pouring rain at about 9pm.

The lorry collided with Spice Cottage restaurant, opposite the junction with Churchgate.

The vehicle’s trailer was loaded and being driven from Sutton Bridge to Spalding by a 65-year-old man, who was uninjured but taken to hospital for a check-up.

The managing director of the transport firm involved told The Voice that at this stage he has no idea what might have caused the crash.

He said: “Our tracker shows that he was travelling at 27mph.

“There is an on-board camera which we haven’t downloaded the information from yet to find out if there was another vehicle involved, but I understand from the driver that that is not the case.

“I spoke to the owner of the restaurant last night and fortunately there were no injuries there either.”

Fire crews from Spalding, Holbeach and Grantham were joined by an urban search and rescue unit. The building was temporarily shored up before the vehicle was removed.

A water main was fractured during the collision and Anglian Water attended to carry out repairs.

The road was eventually reopened around 4.30am on Tuesday.

Any witnesses to the collision who have not already spoken to police, are asked to contact the Collision Witness Hotline on 01522 558855.
