LETTERS – Why change what works?

Since completion of the road works at Market Hill junction, Holbeach, the traffic signals are not staying on green for long.
Before the road repairs, Boston Road South had vehicle detection loops under the road surface that kept the lights green until traffic flow had ceased, thus allowing a large number of vehicles through and preventing snarl-ups at the Tesco and Boyes entrance and exit points.
Boston Road South used to be notorious for traffic build-ups towards the junction, especially towards the end of the week. Vehicles had to wait for several traffic light changes before they got close to the green. But the detection loops fixed that.
But now the lights have reverted to the way they used to be, with very short green sequences and obviously no more detection loops.
It seemed to work well once the loops were put in several years ago, so why change what works?
Maybe the recent road works did take account of traffic flow, but the highways engineers haven’t adjusted the sequencing appropriately?
