I am writing to commend the excellent work of Spalding BID in gathering evidence from residents regarding incidents of inappropriate cycling through the town centre.
This was a fantastic piece of community engagement which has clearly highlighted the scale of an issue that residents face on a daily basis. Having spoken to many residents across South Holland and having reviewed the results of this engagement, it is evident that there is a genuine safety concern within Spalding.
While the police initially stated publicly that they did not feel there was an issue, I am advised that they now accept there is a problem within the town relating to the inappropriate behaviour of some cyclists.
One practical step that could help to reduce this issue would be to reinstate pedestrianisation seven days a week from 10am to 4pm, as previously voted for by residents. This should be supported by clear, unambiguous signage to remove the current confusion in the town centre regarding when the road is open to vehicles and when it is not.
In addition, there should be clear signage at various points throughout the town instructing cyclists to dismount, alongside consistent policing and enforcement to reinforce the correct behaviour expected of anyone using a bicycle in the pedestrianised area.
This inappropriate behaviour has continued for far too long. It is severely affecting the town, as many people no longer feel safe and are therefore choosing not to visit and support local businesses. It is time for clear rules, clear signage, and consistent enforcement.
