LETTERS – Think about the hedgehogs

With what is sometimes called Bonfire Night approaching, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society recently put out the following note:
“Help us spread the word and help hedgehogs this bonfire night.
“Sadly, hedgehogs are particularly vulnerable at this time of year, as hibernation approaches and a pyre can be mistaken for a hibernation nest.
“You can help by sending information to event organisers, to ensure that hedgehogs are at the forefront of their mind when organising their November 5 festivities.”
Encountering a hedgehog was a common nocturnal event only a few decades ago. Now, aside from occasional roadside tragedies, hedgehogs are an increasingly rare sight in our towns and villages, and hedgehogs are in danger of extinction unless action is taken.
If you are having a bonfire/firework event please take precautions on the fifth to protect the poor hedgehogs.
