Now that the clapping for NHS staff and key workers has ceased, I feel that thought should be given for those people who have put their and their family’s lives on the line.
When my grandfather came home from World War One he too was told he was a hero, for that he was given a medal.
I believe our thanks should be a bit more practical so I would like a commitment from our local MP and the government that all car parking charges for our NHS staff be abolished, that nurses should not be seen in food banks due to seven years’ of NHS pay cuts and that key workers should receive a wage that offers them dignity and respect for what they do.
I fear that with the recent arrogance from Dominic Cummings and the total lack of strong leadership from the government that, like my grandfather, being called heroes is all they will get!
Having seen my neighbours, who both work in the NHS come home to their young family, wash and hang their scrubs on the line, it brings home and is a constant reminder that COVID-19 is still out there.
Honour their commitment in practical terms.
