LETTERS – Is 24-hour slots a real necessity?

Some time ago I wrote to my MP and to the planning committee stating my objections to the gambling company Merkur Slots setting up premises in Spalding.

Although the council listened and opposed the application, it was upheld on appeal.

Now I understand they want to open 24 hours a day. Why, if not to make even more money from the desperate people of this town?

Would we allow – or even want – shoe shops, or butchers, or pubs to open 24 hours?

I read with interest in The Spalding Guardian (quoting an investigation by The Guardian national newspaper) about the alleged practices of this company to attempt to fleece as much money as possible from their customers for their alleged profits of £15m this year.I have no knowledge of whether this is correct or not, but wouldn’t be surprised.

There is a move afoot in this lovely town of ours to make things better for everybody – safer and cleaner and a great place to live and visit. I attended a presentation by the Spalding Town Board with this laudable vision in mind in the South Holland Centre just this week.

With all that in mind, I would ask our elected representatives to refuse wholeheartedly this application by a company that only peddles misery and addiction in out town.
