LETTERS – Constant reminder of her work

Much laughter has been heard in the area since David Jones’s letter in support of his idol Jan Whitbourn appeared in the current Voice letters section whom he felt was unfairly treated the previous week by a reader’s letter regarding her self publicity activities plus the merits of the Royal British Legion.

Mr Jones explained he has lived in the area for 12 years and has not been observing things all that closely as he points out that Mrs Whitbourn ‘is not now or has any aspirations to become a councillor’ which is at odds as she was on Whaplode Parish Council, very briefly it’s true, as a seat came up vacant prior to local election time and she scraped in despite the minor fact she did not live there.

Come the actual election, she finished last although many there considered that with all her supposed ‘do gooding’ activities just how would she find the time to act on their behalf, hence not voting as they required somebody dependable and of course, local they could speak to.

Many there now hope Mrs Whitbourn will have put Mr Jones right by now on this minor issue.

As for the Royal British Legion, in recent weeks some national newspapers have highlighted in articles about the executive management of this organisation-charity shutting the very care homes, quoting ‘cost cutting’, that they are supposed to be fund raising, among other things, for ex-servicemen and women, with some of the RBL executives on five and six figure salaries of which details can be found online plus the millions held in the RBL account.

I will point out that members of my family have been members and support the RBL so these points are quite disheartening.

Indeed Mrs Whitbourn appears to doing a lot of charitable work as she is constantly reminding us either by her ‘thank you’ letters or constant photos in the media but then a lot of other, unsung, people in the area who do not crave publicity every step of the way do their charitable or caring acts also because they want to, not to seek the public’s adulation all the while.
