LETTERS – Change of leader won’t wash

I try to avoid Westminster politics these days and support no national party but this is a unique time in the history of government in the UK.

What happens next will deeply affect us all and rural areas like ours are particularly vulnerable.

During the last months, since well before the departure of Boris, we have not had a functioning government. Instead we’ve been treated by the Conservative party to a graphic demonstration of how not to rule a county and a frightening example of how the right wing of that party would act, if it could get away with it.

Personally I’m not a fan of the idea that if we boost the income of the rich, a few crumbs may “trickle down” to we plebs, if we are lucky.

I remind people that no member of the Cabinet expressed public objections to the leadership’s failed mini budget when it was proposed. This sort of attitude flows down the party to lower levels.

The Conservatives need to demonstrate that they are competent and they do care about “ordinary people” ie. anyone except themselves.

If they fail in this we will have a Labour government, another frightening prospect, though some may perhaps think not quite as frightening as that we briefly had under Truss.

A simple change of leader will not wash.

The electorate need to send the Tories the clearest possible signal, at the first available opportunity, that rapid, large and genuine change is necessary if they are to avoid defeat at the next general election.

We will have maybe the only viable opportunity to do that next year, the last chance before a general election.
