There are a million potholes in Britain, probably most of them in Lincolnshire. At least that’s what it feels like when driving around Holbeach and Spalding.
The rural roads in the region are in an atrocious condition, but they have been like this for almost as long as I’ve lived here, since 2005.
I’ve written to the local newspapers on several occasions over a number of years, as have dozens of other road users, but nothing changes.
The roads just get steadily worse and worse.
Sometimes you can steer around a particularly nasty pothole, but if it’s raining and the pothole is full of water, you can’t see it!
Now I expect we will just get another ladle of warm, reassuring words from local council leaders – anything but actually fixing the issue, always blaming the lack of funds.
Meanwhile enormous sums are being paid out annually in compensation for damage to cars, money that could be better spent on repairing potholes.
Trouble is, when potholes are finally repaired, sometimes the work is substandard so that they open up again after just a few weeks.
Oh, and will it be fourth time lucky for Anglian Water when they attempt yet another repair of the recurring subsidence in Boston Road South, Holbeach?
Last time the road was closed for months, although to be fair, that was partly due to the pandemic.
