LETTER: Shame on you Sir John

Recently we have read two excellent letters by Messrs. Sadd and Meekings which demonstrate the failures in society directly attributable to the governing political party.

Since then we have also had the suppression of a report regarding possible Russian interference in British politics and the reports of millions of pounds being donated to the Conservative Party.

With regard to the former matter only a cynic would think that the Prime Minister has anything to hide and perhaps the same cynic might ask what do the donors of such large sums, particularly foreign residents, want in return for the money.

A similar case arises where organisations pay obscene sums to MPs for their alleged expertise. I note with interest that these serious questions are not addressed by Sir John Hayes on behalf of his party in his campaign literature, perhaps he would care to comment in these columns.

Mr Meekings refers to the difference between the caring appearance given locally to the electorate by Sir John and his voting record in Parliament which has supported the government in its devastating attacks upon the least fortunate in society. Maybe those who write in praise of Sir John would like to attempt to clarify.

Much is now being said about leaving the EU, new facile slogans have been created, “get Brexit done” and “unleash the potential” drip from the Prime Minister’s lips. It is a great pity that he and others like Sir John cannot explain precisely how we are all going to be better off out of the EU.

I have no great expectations of a change of government however much it is desperately needed, the possibility of this country continuing to be led by people to whom mediocrity would be an achievement horrifies me but one never knows, perhaps sense might prevail come voting day.

For the miseries and problems which have been created in this country in the last ten years I say shame on you, Sir John, your leader and the party you represent whose description by Aneurin Bevan still stands.

I Sloan
