I have just come across the letter by Charles Acland in the last edition of The Voice.
I read it three or four times to check it was not a joke, then checked the calender, no it’s not April 1.
Are Mr Sadd and Mr Meekings thoughts so misguided?
Let’s look at the last ten years of Tory government.
First we had the great social experiment, austerity, we all became poorer, except the Tory party’s wealth donors, we are now told it was unnecessary and is over?
Record levels of overall poverty.
Record levels of child poverty.
Record levels of homelessness.
Record levels of rough sleepers
Appalling indifference to the funding and care of the elderly and infirm.
A depleted, demoralized, police force.
A depleted, demoralized, health service.
A critical shortage of GPs, despite many hollow promises of extra numbers.
I could go on but it would only be more and more depressing, and I’m sure many people have their own horror stories.
Are the Meekings and Sadds of this world so misguided?
My grandfather, a wise old man, had a saying: “A full belly makes you blind.”
I can only assume from Mr Acland’s letter that there are at least 33,338 very full bellies locally.
