LETTER: Public toilets in Spalding need a caretaker

About three months ago I found the disabled toilet in Vine Street car park disabled, which was down to vandals. They had smashed the mechanism to allow it to be flushed.

Being a Saturday, I telephoned Lincolnshire County Council and got hold of a supervisor. I explained what the problem was and after about three weeks it was fixed.
The other toilet in the Sheep Market area has had the door nailed up with a notice “damaged by vandals”. This has been there for three months.

My wife is disabled and is in a wheelchair so the only suitable toilet now is in Ayscoughfee Gardens, which is OK thanks to a good, diligent staff there.
It seems obvious to me that we are missing the caretakers we have had previously – gone but not forgotten. We need someone who can look after all the toilets.

It is all very well the council locking up and not bothering with the others but if they have had any experience with the disabled and being in that circumstance they ought to get it sorted now. Do not neglect the disabled as they appear to be doing at the moment.
If the toilets are being used for drug taking they should do what Norfolk County Council do to prevent people seeing the veins to inject into.

We would be prepared to pay more Council Tax to get the problem put right permanently.
