I read in the last edition of The Voice, your news that Lincolnshire County Council is to press ahead with its plans to close many of the counties libraries.
Could I therefore remind readers, that this is a Conservative Party plan, brought about at a time when they had more power on the council, and although the electorate later voted more UKIP councillors to the county, their efforts to stop it were not taken notice of and overridden by the Conservative lead executive.
Experiences at my local library which is already at times run by a willing troupe of volunteers from Crowland Cares, has highlighted some problems.
Whilst most volunteers are quite happy to help users with advice, they are unable to operate the higher tech equipment, increasingly found in libraries these days.
Therefore those constituents who currently use library computers, printers, copiers and scanners, are likely to find a reduced or non-existent service, if this plan is to go ahead.
As a parish councillor I understand what the duties of a council are when it comes to providing amenities.
We should not be trying to make them profit, they are a cost which the public want us to provide out of their rates.
Just imagine if every council were to say, our playing fields and children’s swings are only used in earnest once a week, therefore we’ll close them down.
It would be a public disgrace to the traditions of England, which people expect us to maintain, as they do the County Council’s libraries.
