Driving home from Spalding on Saturday afternoon, my wife and I came across an accident on Spalding Road, Pinchbeck, opposite Market Way. A gentleman had fallen with his mobility scooter off the pavement and onto the road.
Luckily a car coming from Pinchbeck had stopped and thus prevented any vehicle from hitting the prone man.
With the other driver and others, we were able to get the gentleman and his scooter up. He was shocked but not badly damaged by his fall but his scooter would not start.
I decided to contact the emergency services and was speaking to the ambulance 999 line when a police van passed. We waved at him in more hope than anticipation. He did a 360-degree turn around the traffic lights at the end of Wardentree Lane/Pinchbeck Road junction and came to help.
We were still talking to the ambulance services, and the policeman advised us to continue with them while he tried to find the gentleman’s carer who, by luck, he actually knew, and who lives in Surfleet.
The ambulance team soon arrived and soon after the policeman returned. Having found the carer was not at home he had managed to contact her, and with her help arranged for friends of the gentleman to come to support him and sort out the mobility scooter.
At this time my wife and I decided that the professionals were not in need of our help and so we left.
Both my wife and I were pleased with the help we received, but more than that, we had been helped by a local bobby who knew not only the area and the people, but was willing and able to help a situation that was not necessarily his normal remit.
Having lived in Pinchbeck for over 50 years, I can remember the police house on Rotten Row, where the local PC, PC Weatherhill, lived and worked, it is very gratifying to get the same local service that we used to have, albeit in a van.
