May I thank Janet Doubleday for her response to my letter that was published in The Voice on November 12 regarding my views on Glenis Willmott’s speech at the Labour Party Conference in September and what our, yes, our Labour MEPs do on our behalf.
Obviously I will not repeat the content of my letter, but it was merely explaining some facts around the central role in Europe and it’s not all about Brussels telling us what to do.
Just 13.2 per cent of our laws have anything to do with Brussels. Also 28 nations of the EU celebrate that they are united in diversity.
All EU member states have their different languages, cultures, histories and laws. No-one joins to lose their identity, in fact the EU’s motto is United in Diversity.
Even a quote from Margaret Thatcher, being in Europe hadn’t made the French any less French and on this note she was right. As Britain being a part of the EU hasn’t made us any less British either.
To say that my party is responsible for the situation young people face today, that may be the opinion of Janet Doubleday and many others, but we are all entitled to an opinion and I respect that. Likewise, I have my opinions that
I will gladly share with others and hopefully be respected for doing so.
Actually, young people can work, study and train across the entire EU through the EU’s Erasmus programme. Also following the financial crisis, Labour MEPs have also championed an EU scheme that works with national governments to tackle long-term youth unemployment.
In the near future, 2017, we will all have a very important decision to make during the referendum on Europe, I am sorry if I gave Janet Doubleday the impression it is all about me, but it was only me having my opinion.
It’s good to generate healthy debate through our great local free paper in the V Mail section, may it long continue.
