LETTER: Is there an election coming up?

I have read with interest over the past few weeks, the issues concerning the granting of licence applications for even more premises to sell alcohol from early morning until dusk.

Most people, myself included, are of the opinion, that there are already far too many shops selling alcohol, they only encourage drink-related crime, public nuisance and disorder, not to mention the empty bottles, etc, which are littering the streets of Spalding.

If these people are adult enough to drink they should also be capable of disposing of their rubbish.

Why should the tax payers have to finance additional litter bins.

The headlines in February 26 issue of The Voice states that MP John Hayes says Spalding has too many off-licences and he is ready to make a stand against further applications being approved.

Mr Hayes says he is concerned about the detrimental effect that granting more licences might have on street drinking and anti-social behaviour.

Where has he been these past few years when the applications were being rubber-stamped by his Conservative party group?

Is he prompted by the fact that the Bourne Road, Station Gates and Matmore Gate have caused such public objection? It’s a “vote loser”.

Is an election coming soon? I support the Independents’ position on these matters and would urge you to vote for them in May. Make your vote count.
