LETTER: Hope court will serve for many years

Regarding your front page on Thursday, December 17, ‘Hopes to buy the court house for all to use’.

After reading this report I was filled with the hope of a good news story for this fine historic building in the heart of our market town.

I pass this location quite a lot and it would be such a shame for this building to deteriorate further into another eyesore in the centre of town – we have enough already.

Thousands of pounds were spent on the gates and railings at the front, and the location used to house the police station and register office at the side of the main building. The building was erected in 1843 and to the left of the grounds there was the United Methodist Free Church from 1879-1955.

To have a consortium of some of the biggest local business representatives has to be a move in the right direction.

Having seen the building standing empty all this time I thought “there goes another part of our town being left to rot”.

As for its use, I have had several suggestions on Facebook: a hotel, bar etc, but it could be used as a community hub and incorporate the Citizens Advice Bureau, community radio, tourist information alongside an Aspects of

Spalding museum, which has already been suggested in your report. I realise Ayscoughfee Hall already houses some similar facilities.

I would be interested to see what the community wants from this project, but hopefully we will see the right outcome for such a lovely building and for the people it will serve for many years to come.
