As the Government continue to go forward with the development of “fracking” using low cost tax incentives, concerns are growing over the potential damage it could cause on a national basis.
Government spokesmen highlight the numerous advantages fracking is supposed to bring, but little is said about the most important factor, shale gas is a fossel fuel which, when burned, produces C02, just like coal and oil.
Also, the gas itself methane is just about the worst substance known for increasing global warming.
It is not known just how much methane will escape into the atmosphere during the fracking process or how much damage it will do to our water supplies.
What happens to the site after the fracking process has finished? As I understand it, some parts of the site have to be capped off with large amounts of concrete, only to be left as another blot on our landscapes after the fracking process has finished.
The support proposed by the government for fracking will have an impact on the development of solar, wind and tidal power, which are our only hopes for the future energy generation. One of the ironies is French company Total Oil is moving into the fracking industry in Britain.
However, France has a total ban on fracking.
All the evidence shows that fracking will increase overall the speed with which global warming occurs.
Governments must not just look at short term profits, but the long term considerations of future generations to come.
