LETTER: Club expansion is welcome

In response to Mr Robert West’s comments in a recent edition of The Voice relating to removal of an internal wall at the Constitutional Club in Broad Street – “a crime against the grade 2 listed building”.

I would ask whether or not it is prudent as a member of the Spalding and District Civic Society’s planning committee to be airing his views in public whilst an appeal process still exists.

Surely this demonstrates bias and perhaps is ill considered as we approach election time (Mr West is standing as an Independent candidate).

Had he made more accurate enquiries he would have been made aware that the “brown painted shutter doors that look very industrial and commercial” are a temporary measure which were installed to make the bar area secure.

The more appropriate screen, more in keeping with the character of the vestibule, has been designed and will be submitted to SHDC and English Heritage as part of the continuing process.

It may also have been advisable for him to pop into the club and chat to some of our 450 members, the majority of whom would have told them that the club expansion is very welcome and a much better alternative to having a very large and imposing town centre Grade 2 listed building vacated and to lie empty for the sort of time that we have experienced with the Bull & Monkie and White Hart.
