Ladies’ hockey round-up: Spalding Poachers and Sutton both start 2022 fixtures in four-midable fashion

South Holland duo Spalding Poachers 1st and Long Sutton 1st both enjoyed 4-2 away wins as they returned to East Women’s Hockey League Division Two North West action on Saturday.

For the flawless leaders Poachers, it’s now 13 wins from as many games after they dispatched hosts Pelicans 1st.

Charlotte Maplethorpe scored Spalding’s first goal, slotting a penalty flick coolly into the corner.

It was 2-0 when Hermione Wright drove the ball past the opposition and found Maplethorpe in the D, who scored again after a quick turn and shot.

However, the hosts hit back to make it 2-1 at half-time and then levelled soon after the restart.

Spalding stuck to their guns though and, from a short corner, a one-two between Mia Dewing and Georgina Maplethorpe at the top of the D saw Dewing put Spalding back into the lead at 3-2.

Evie Maltby then clinched the 4-2 win with another strike from a short corner just before the close.

Sutton, meanwhile, picked up vital points away to fellow strugglers St Neots 2nd.

The goals came from Lisa Baker, Amber Jones and a brace from player-of-the-match Hannah Baker in a 4-2 triumph.

In Division Three North West, Spalding Poachers 2nd eased to a 6-0 win over friendly foes Spalding Poachers 3rd.

Karen Timby (2), Amy Naylor (2), Kate Amess and Maisie Foden got the goals at Glen Park in a game that went with the form book.

The result leaves the victorious 2nd side in third place, with the 3rd team second from bottom.

Saturday fixtures: Long Sutton 1st v COP 3rd (1pm); Spalding 1st v St Neots 2nd (2pm); Spalding 2nd v Ely City 1st (11am); Bourne Deeping 2nd v Spalding 3rd (3pm); Long Sutton 3rd v Bourne Deeping 5th (11.30am).
