A Holbeach man has been thanked for helping the town take part in a national event to mark VE Day earlier this year.
The Holbeach branch of the Royal Observer Corps Association usually lights the beacon alongside others in the rest of the country on such events.
But for this year’s 80th anniversary of VE Day the association was initially told by Holbeach Parish Council that it would be unsafe to do so.
The branch’s John Kinder investigated the issue and found this wasn’t true, so he and a representative of South Holland District Council decided to go ahead with the lighting.
John organised event permission, a food stall, the Holbeach Town Band, a compere, raffle, PA system, the local Scouts, Air Cadets and Royal Observer Corps Association members for the event on the evening of June 6.
Tony Topliss of the Royal Observer Corps Association, said: “With help he organised from others he also arranged for an official road closure, toilets, a local fire service appliance to be in attendance and a firework display to round off the evening.
“John also opened a Go Fund Me page to assist with expenses along with various other monetary donations.
“For all John’s hard work, his efforts have been rewarded when he was presented with the Palmer trophy with grateful thanks of all the members of this branch.”
