Junction bid will be looked at

A late councillor’s bid for new safety measures at a Spalding junction has been given a boost with councillors to look into the £90,000 work.

Earlier this year Coun Angela Newton successfully campaigned for double yellow lines be put in to stop people parking around Winsover Road’s junction with Hawthorn Bank and Carrington Road.

Before her death in August she’d also requested it be looked to turn the current zebra crossing on Winsover Road into a pelican crossing that utilises traffic lights.

On Monday Lincolnshire County Council’s Planning Committee voted to allocate £10,000 to look in to doing the work which the authority estimates would cost £90,000.

That’s despite an initial study saying the junction fell just short of the criteria for a Pelican Crossing, but within the range it could still be considered as an option.

Committee chair Ian Fleetwood said: “I know Spalding reasonably well and know this location. Road safety is paramount accross Lincolnshire so I think the numbers stack up.”

“There’s high density of housing on both sides of the road,” said Coun Ian Carrington. “It’s an A road and there’s a community shop on one end of the crossing as well. Pedestrian safety must be paramount.”

Finally, Coun Alison Austin added: “It’s currently a busy road and is one that residents will be relieved when the Spalding Western bypass is built.”
